Web-page design?

Apr 19, 2009 21:32

Does anyone know of an easy, intuitive, web-page editor? I was going to try to use WordPress, but it's proven to be counter-intuitive and way to convoluted to be of any use. Is there a good, open source one (or cheap one) that anyone knows of?

Edit: A good Web-Design FAQ might be useful as well.

http://www.seamonkey-project.org/ has a HTML editor in it.

There's always Dreamweaver, but not exactly open source.

Keep in mind that I'm a total computer noob, and the closest I've come to editing html was programing in Pascal. ;)

What is it that you want to do? I mean, if you don't know what you're doing, you might just want to grab a pre-designed template and load it up in Seamonkey, and tinker with it a bit.

I'm trying to resurrect my old web-serial, 1001 Insomniac Nights. A friend of mine handled the web-design for me originally, but I'd like to actually do this myself. Unfortunately, I guess I'm basically starting at ground zero with web-design. I got the impression that what I need to find is some kind of "What you see is what you get" interface that will allow me to drop in and place jpg's, text boxes, etc., and I got the idea that Word-Press might fit that definition.

Anyway, going to look at those templates and see if anything will work. That might be the best way to do this.

Actually, yeah, we do at the office.

Do I need Adobe Dreamweaver for this or is Illustrator all I need?

I seem to remember something that looked like you could just upload a webpage when playing with C4 but I don't actually have a book on it. I just use the manual online. There are tutorials online as well. I have a kazillion doctors' appointments today so I don't know if I'll be bringing up AI or not. The next time that I do, I'll look. In the meantime, you might check out this and this.

Wordpress isn't exactly a web-page editor. It's more of a content management system. If you want some tutorials in how to use it to advantage, I'd be happy to help with that.

Also, do you want an editor where you can see/work with the code directly, or do you want a WYSIWYG editor?

I'd prefer a WYSIWYG editor. Katmoonshaker posted a guide to using Adobe Illustrator to design the web-page, which I have and can do, but that leaves the question of how do I take the design and make it an actual web-page when I'm done.
