I've arrived at the hospital with a patient with blood sugars in the high 600's. They call it Diabetic Keto Acidosis and they wave you past the check in window and lots of nurses and doctors come rush around your patient. :)
No I was not driving, I was in the back continuing the assessment and calling in the report to the ER. I'm not allowed to drive with lights and sirens yet. In the next 4-6 months I should get a higher level driving status and be able to drive with the siren. Its kinda a rush to do it.
Yep, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA) is very serious. But from my point of view in the field, there is little I can do other than get a person to definitive care. If I were a paramedic, I'd start an IV to start flushing the sugar out. But its serious and we had several nurses rush in and start there thing as soon as we walked in the door.
