Daddy Dearest - RP Moment

Jun 15, 2008 10:26

A child Megan gripped the dining room chair and pushed it through the room and into the kitchen, where she shoved it in front of the stove. She grabbed onto the seat of it and swung herself up. The chair shook under her as she stood up and peered into the pot. She looked at the counter beside her where she had pushed her ingredients.

Momentarily, she put her hands on her hips and thought it over. Then she poured milk into her pot and turned the stove on, whispering the steps to herself as she went. She poured in all the ingredients and started stirring. In the middle of it, she held her wooden spoon up to her mouth.

“Ladies and gentlemans, introducing Chef Meg, the greatest cook in the world!” She drew out the sentence grandly, throwing her arms out. The front door sounded and she kept stirring, but looked to the kitchen doorway.

“Anyone home?” A voice boomed.

“Daddy!” She shouted. He appeared in the kitchen and looked her over. She was wearing her mother's apron and had smudges of chocolate pudding all over her face and arms. There were smudges on the counters, on the stove, and on the floor. He smiled.

“What are you doing, Maggie?”

“Mommy and Karen are shopping, so I'm making dinner,” she said proudly with a grin. She yanked the wooden spoon from the pot and held it out to him, splashing some goo onto his work suit. “Oops...sorry, Daddy.”

“It's okay, honey.” He stepped up and peered at the spoon. He opened his mouth and she fed him a bite. “Mmm, that is delicious.”

Megan beamed. “I made it all by myself! And I was careful of the hot stove! And I didn't burn anything!” Her dad shut the stove off and moved the pudding to a back burner.

“I'm proud of you, but I think you need bath before Mommy comes home.”

“I do not, see?” She held out her arm and licked it, then did the same to the other. Then she stuck out her tongue trying to lick her face, but obviously wasn't able to, and just rolled her head all around trying to reach it. Her dad laughed. He grabbed her by the arm pits and set her on the counter next to the sink.

“Close your eyes,” he said. She did as she was told. He picked up the water sprayer and turned it on, and sprayed her with water. She shrieked in joy and laughed.

“Daddy! No!” She opened her eyes and fought with him for the hose and aimed it at him. “I got you!”

“No!” He called with a grin. “No water!” Megan was throwing her head back laughing. The front door sounded again, and the sounds of Megan's mom and Karen could be heard. They stopped dead in the kitchen and looked around. Megan and her dad looked at them both and pointed to each other. “She started it.”

“He started it,” she said at the same time.

Megan rolled over in her sleep and woke slightly from her dream of a memory. She groaned softly at the pain in her heart and rolled into...she sighed. Charlie. His arms automatically held her tighter. She relaxed against him. Sleeping beside him - this was something new. And she liked it. It made the dreams she'd been having less painful. The night before had been something new for them, too. Being with him, being intimate like that for the first time, had been close to incredible. In a way that she hadn't had in a very long time. If they hadn't both been so nervous - it probably would have reached incredible.

She sighed again and his lips pressed to the top of her head. "Hmmm," she murmured.

"You always sleep so restlessly?" He asked in a sleep ridden voice.

"Mmm, I dunno." She gave a yawn into his chest.

"K."

"Mmmhmm."

They both lay there quietly, and despite the company, her mind went to places it always did on that day. Her father. His face in her mind. Sometimes it was blurry from years gone by, but other moments it was so clear she felt she could reach out and touch him.

His red hair just like hers. The freckles across his face that looked so handsome on him. His red beard and wide smile. His hand that was so big compared to hers when they walked side by side and hand in hand. His arms that gave the best bear hugs.

"What you doin' today?" Charlie's voice broke her thoughts.

"Mmm, nothing."

"Wanna come home with me? Mom's makin' brunch for the family."

Her eyes opened and she looked at him. He was already watching her. "Meet your family? Now? I mean..already?"

He chuckled. "No, Meg. Hang out with my family. Get out for a day. Free food. Great food, my mom's cooking."

"B-but..it's meeting your family.."

"It's me bringin' a good friend and old co-worker. My parents have given up on me and my sister ever gettin' married or havin' kids. You won't hafta worry about getting harassed. I mean, no pressure. You don't have to."

She watched his face closely and brought a finger against his cheek as she considered it. The idea behind meeting his parents scared the hell out of her. Especially on a day she usually sat alone in her own misery. But..it was a day with him. She smiled softly. "Okay."

He grinned. "Okay." He kissed her quickly and climbed over her to get out of bed and head for the shower. "You comin'?" He asked, without turning around. She laughed and followed.
