This corrupt world we live in

It is so crazy how the simplest things can speak so loudly to you. I just got finished reading some friends' LiveJournal's and there seemed to be a constant theme throughout them--being black or being different from others and how this affects us. It is something I try not to bring up often because I DON'T WANT TO BELIEVE we still have racism in ( Read more... )

I know that it's difficult being the minority in medical school. I only see a few black students at the hospital that I work at. One thing is for sure. I know that they have to be very intelligent and smart to be there instead of thinking it's because of affirmative action that they are there. Keep your head up. Every time I see a black student, intern, resident, fellow or attending, I'm so happy (even though some of them look down at the "common" black folks that work in the hospital). I know they worked hard to get to the place that they're in. No matter what anyone says or thinks, you worked hard to get where you are and you're going to do fine.

Also, I feel the same way about my age. I remember my 16th birthday so vividly and now I'm about to celebrate my 27th in 4 months. It's crazy. Just enjoy every moment you have because time is going to start flying.

Yeah white people can sometimes think they are better than us as far as academics. But oh well, I just ignore them until they say something really ignorant. How do you plan to celebrate your birthday?

Well, I have class from 9 am until 4 pm, so on the DAY OF my birthday, I will be dealing with class and stuff, probably studying at night, I will probably wait until the weekend to do something, which will not be much, my mother probably comes over and we will most likely go eat out and see Madea's Family Reunion, which I am so excited to see!

happy early birthday!!

i know what you mean, i'll be 22 next month and i can't believe it...i think i subconsciously thought i was just gonna stay 21 forever too, lol.

i can only imagine that you would encounter a lot of racial prejudice in medical school...it sucks to have to deal with that on top of how hard it is to even get through med-school...but i guess that's the charge left upon us as Black people, lol.

advice from black med folks... teenhealthdiva February 23 2006, 21:04:04 UTC
i stumbled onto your journal from my friend salina's page. my dude and i are med. folks (he's an internist and i'm a "supposed-to-be-pediatrician" who deciced to ditch med school and do public health research.) trust me, we've both experienced the "you-got-here-due-to-affirmative-action" as well. don't let them steal your dream...

peace.

Trust me, I ain't gonna let them get to me, I just hate the fact that they think that way but you can't change how people think, especially if they were brought up that way, just gotta pray for them.
