"Homilies" is the correct plural. And I just love the word 'homily.'
And it depends- if there's no priest available or if the celebrant so chooses, then a deacon or lay person can give a sermon/homily.
Yeah, I think I may have to give more consideration to the priesthood. My spiritual director has told me to start meditating on what I think the priesthood is, and I now think the priesthood and ordained ministry is to set apart someone as a living blessing and bless-er. As Israel is a blessing to the nations around her, so is the priesthood. It gets to be 'special' but it also has the burden of carrying that blessing and sharing that blessing in all times and in all places.
