Jon gets a call from the White House direct to his office phone on a Thursday morning.

‘Hold for the President,’ says a voice. Jon thinks of hanging up on what is clearly a prank, but before he can, Barack Obama comes on the line.

Jon’s spoken to Barack Obama before, but never President Obama. There is small talk, which Jon squeaks and stutters through, and then the President is saying, ‘I’d like you to come work for me.’

He goes on to use words like ‘insight’, ‘eloquence’ and ‘perspective’.

Jon ends up on a plane to DC, still baffled.

An alternate ending to take the pieces (& build them skywards)

Pete knows where people belong, and he knows Patrick should've stayed in Chicago.

Patrick finds he doesn’t care. He goes home for two days then takes a cab to the motel and climbs back in the van. It’s the only time he’s seen Pete look surprised.

Pete talks, talks like his words are fuelling their speed, conjuring the road before them as fast as they roar along.

They have no maps, but a new tape deck.

Faces are fleeting to Patrick; Pete is his only constant. He misses Chicago all the time, but knows it’s too late to go back.
