So when I had to fill out my official application(after having been accepted) to this study abroad program, one of the questions I had was about the housing. Because he's legally required to give your passport information to the hostel, and the hostel has no idea who you are.

seriously, don't bitch out your coordinator for this one. It's not his fault. I've been to a lot of hostels in various European countries, and while they're pretty understanding about gender (most are mixed-gender dorms) if the university makes a request about gender divisions, they go by official documentation only. Honestly, I'm rather impressed that the EU is enlightened enough to let you travel with your passport the way it is.

like I said, I've stayed at hostels saying I'm male and no one's had an issue with that, I've only had to give my passport number, nothing else. And it surprises me that the program decided on gender-separated hostel rooms in the first place, as most hostels have mixed rooms, which would have made this whole problem go away.

I didn't have to give my passport information to the hostel I stayed at last week, and I registered as male.
