Probably a combination of a low self esteem, being grateful to Sherlock and falling in love with him. And taking the horrible lows with the amazing highs. idk I can never get into John's head.
Perfect story! And I do not think Sherlock is bad. In such relationships always decides the sub. It was he who defines the boundaries of what will tolerate and what will not be tolerated. Sherlock was lucky - he met John, who is prepared to tolerate any attitude. But believe me, John enjoys as well. Sherlock - the emotional! sadist, John - the emotional! masochist. And they're okay with that.
This is a facet of Sherlock that isn't often written. Here, he is cognizant of his unsavory treatment of John and the possible result thereof [“He was certain that one, terrible, haunting night, he would take too much, and John would be nothing but dust under his fingers.”], yet he continues with that treatment and even revels in it.
And John, poor John, takes whatever he can get because he loves Sherlock. He acknowledges the unhealthy nature of their association yet, which almost acts as a panacea to the sadness of it all. That is until the end when Sherlock once again stabs John's heart and John accepts it. Or does he?
I can't help but wish there were more to it. That's one of the powers of great storytelling - leaving the reader to ponder the "what happens next". And ponder I shall.
This Sherlock is an incredibly selfish one. He knows when John is happy or hurt, and he knows how to fix it, but that knowledge doesn't matter to him. Whether his wants coincide with John's or not is neither here nor there, cause he's not changing. (and yes maybe he's a little sadistic)
Thank you very much! Can I just say I've loved your comments and you are all awesome and stuff?
