I saw crocuses this weekend! There’s one patch in a neighboring city that always blooms weeks ahead of anything else. I suppose it’s because they’re right up against the side of a building that must have some sort of powerful heating system in the basement right underneath, but I prefer to imagine that it’s the location of a secret portal to some ( Read more... )

I only saw the trailer for John Carter, and it made me wonder if this was Avatar II: The Return of Race Fail. Certainly, the trailer made me think it was that, but I don't know if that's true or not.

I also have no idea if it's based on anything. From other comments I've heard, it sounds like it's based on books or something, in which case, I might be a lot more forgiving -- if the books were, say, written in the 60s, then it's not so straightforward to apply a modern viewpoint to books written back then.

Hmm, it's certainly a good thing to keep in mind. There was an encounter that made me uncomfortable involving the Native Americans on Earth (just post Civil War era), but I didn't find the interaction between Carter and either the "Red Martians" or the "Green Martians" to be problematic in the way Avatar was. But of course, I'm coming from a privileged white background so I admit I may not be seeing it and would welcome other opinions. There wasn't (to me) the same almost "holy" aura of "white savior" around Carter as in Avatar, and the Martians (especially the Red ones) had a relatively advanced culture technologically so there wasn't the weird mix of patronizing/glorifying the nature-loving savages thing.

And indeed, it is based on a book published in 1917: A Princess of Mars, by Edgard Rice Burroughs (who also wrote Tarzan).

I was thinking that there could be some pretty amazing cosplay generated by this movie!

I have never read the books, and had very low expectations going in, so I am sure that helped me enjoy them even more! I am glad you still found it enjoyable, even if not quite to the level of the books!

the crocuses i planted in a plot in the middle of my front yard are up, and i like to pretend the same thing; that they came up so early because there's a little faery portal there.

course, it's really an illegal gray water effluent pipe, but STILL-
