So sorry to hear about your loss... but the patterns and poetry are beautiful!
I go back and rewrite the beginning first, because it might make the ending play out differently in subtle ways, even if it's just how a character delivers a particular line. I might miss that subtle stuff if I power through, and either have to rewrite it all anyway or wind up leaving it not quite right.
Yeah, I am worried about that subtle stuff too. I've been trying to power through because I am so close to the end, but I am thinking that maybe I really do need to go back now. Thank you for the perspective!
I have a biography of Edna St. Vincent Millay in my TBR pile!
I have to go back and rewrite. I'm halfway through my current ms and I just hit a point now where I have to go back and do some rewriting. I've been trying to just power though, but I hit a point where I become paralyzed unless I fix it.
Is it Savage Beauty? I just bought that for myself -- wanting a little more context for the letters.
I normally go back and rewrite when I realize there's something significant to redo, but I've always figured that out either much earlier (during the first third) or later (after finishing the draft). I had been thinking maybe I was just being lazy, but I am starting to think no, I am paralyzed (as you say). Thank you for the insight!
Edited to add: And good luck with your own rewriting!
I am glad to hear what other people's experiences have been. I often go back and rewrite when I'm earlier in drafting, or after finishing the draft, but not usually when I am this far along. I think you are very right that it depends on the project. (And good luck with the tweaking of your own piece!)
Thanks, Jenn! I am coming to the conclusion I don't have the new story clear in my head. I would rather keep going but I think I have convinced myself some retrenching may be in order...
