Ben frowned at the cork -- the stubborn, stupid cork -- as he twisted the corkscrew a few more times and tried to pull it out.

"Why couldn't you have developed an attraction toward a girl down in the town, if it had to be a young girl? Would've been much -- easier," Ben said with a grunt, finally popping the cork out.

"Down in the town," he snorts, rubbing at his forehead. "I wish I could have, I really honestly do. I wish I had met her at a cafe, or something like that. A bookstore, anything. I would have liked her the same. I don't mean -- destiny or anything like that. Just that she's a very intelligent and charming girl."

Once Ben gets the bottle open, Jean holds his glass out for a refill. "You didn't break the cork, did you? I could go get a coffee filter."

"Well she's not your -- your lover, is she? She's not my lover either, but 'girlfriend' sounds sort of... banal." He sips at his wine with a thoughtful look, trying to figure out how to phrase things.

"She's stubborn. But so am I. I don't think I could be in a relationship with anyone who was any sort of pushover. But I like pleasing her. I love buying her little things and watching her face light up. I love... making dinner for her. I love how she insists on doing the dishes, after wards. I love the surprised little look on her face when I show her some new dish or wine. Some little piece of French culture she hadn't known about before. All the little things, you know?"
