The mysterious third trimester (that lasts 4 1/2 months)

Mar 04, 2003 10:36

Trimester is a word that implies things segmented into 3s. The first TRI-mester is 3 months long. The second TRI-mester is 3 months long. The third TRI-mester however is standardly 4 months long. Sure, if you delivered after only a 3 month 3rd trimester everyone would be OK with that and baby would be fine, but you're due date is actually 4 ( Read more... )

Why on earth do they say it's 9 months when it's 10 1/2? Maybe it's 9 months from the day your period should have come? It makes no sense :P

nope. They will let you go into labor and not consider it preterm at 9 months (36 weeks) from the date of your last period...which has NO relation to the gestational age of the baby in most cases.

I had this question with my first pregnancy, and they tend to view it as 9 five-week months rather than 10 four-week months, but if you add in the extra ten days, it'd still be 9 and half five-week months.

And I just realized that this logic is completely wrong. Apparently I still didn't get the explanation. Nine five-week months would be 45 weeks gestation, which would be torture.

Hmm.

That means that instead of five months along, I would be... six months... hmm.

Damnit!

Ack! 45 weeks!!! That's like some kind of torture technique!

Okay, but I don't buy into the 10 month thing. 4 weeks doesn't equal a month. My last period was at the end of July, and I am due at the end of April. That's 9 calendar months.

Oooh, yeah, dvds are the way to go. We have 2 Baby Einstein tapes that are SHOT after 2 years of use.

((hugs)) on the ups and downs..

You're right, but when you're calculating do you go from the date of your last period (say July 17th like me) and say that on March 17th you're 8 months pregnant or at 32 weeks (Feb 23rd you're 8 months pregnant... My dr's office does it by the weeks. Neither's really right or wrong. It's just all confusing is kind of my point :)

I usually count backwards from my due date for months - like at the end of Feb, I considered myself 7 mos. That's what I use when talking to menfolk and the general public. ;) Otherwise, I just use weeks.

You're right, it's a confusing MESS!

Holy Moly! 10 DAYS past the due date?!?! NOOOOOO!!!! But hey, that'll make me eligible for the FMLA ~ lol Damn.

You know, I've noticed the baby seems to be dabbling a little lower too... it's so nice to have someone that's due the same time to compare notes... hehe we should have a race at the end, maybe make some bets, to how has theirs first! LOL We could try all the inducing techniques, haha!

Hrmm.. getting emotional again? That's not fun... I feel you on the grin and bear it stage, for sure though.

How's the sound quality of the Baby Einstein tapes? I read a review that said they sound awful and that the pianist misses keys throughout the tape.

It's not the audio tapes, it's the DVDs and VHS tapes. my cousin has them all for her baby so I've seen almost all of them already and I think they're really great. i don't know anything about the audio ones though...

We should totally take bets. Maybe make a poll or something for people to vote. I'm starting the induction stuff (sex and Evening Primrose at least) at 36 weeks. You? No sex for you though, hahaha, I'm going to win!

Actually I read this article that said that semen is the best way to induce. It's good to gt it on your cervix because of the relaxin (sp?) but it's 10 times more effective if you injest it. YICK! I can already hear Don: "But honey, come on, it'll get the baby here sooner..."

Youre ON!! I'm going to recruit a guy friend for this one! Youre starting at 36wks huh? That gives me a couple wks still... I can work it :D

And, yeah... "Do it for the baby!" Hahaha

Maybe we should scrap the whole "month" deal and take it week by week. I'm at 23... that's over halfway... and that's all I need to worry about... right? I know my date of conception (I never keep up with periods very well), and my ultrasound confirmed that date...

How is the Dr. Sears pregnancy book? I saw a Dr. Sears AP book the other day, but I've been looking for an AP-based pregnancy book to read, and I can't seem to find one.

I really love the Dr. Sears pregnancy book. It's really helped me so much. There's another one I like too, but it's not much about pregnancy and more about labor and delivery and the first few weeks with the baby. It's written by a doula so not necessarily AP oriented. I'd definately get the Dr. Sears book if you can. I've been really happy with it and calmed by it because it's so thorough.

Yeah, the Dr. Sears timing totally fucked with my head. It's nothing like what my midwife does. So I just go with my midwife's numbers but adjust them one week back because I KNOW I ovulated a week early (I was charting) and I KNOW the day we conceived (or at least the day we had impregnanting sex). They would say I'm 32 weeks now, I say I'm 33, in the end the difference there is negligable, and it's actually good because my due date is a week off, so I'll get 3 weeks overdue before they have to induce instead of their 2 weeks, which make me happy.
