Retribution

Methos was careful, cautious in everything that he did or said around Kronos or anyone else for that matter. It wasn’t that he was scared but rather that he wanted to keep his dark secrets to himself. Behind his deceiving soft eyes were secrets, thoughts, and dreams that he didn’t want anyone to know or even imagine. He kept them private for the simple fact that if most people knew what he was really thinking then he wouldn’t survive long enough to see how far his immortality took him.

It took Methos years and careful planning to actually betray Kronos. Cassandra had posed a problem with trust between them and Methos needed that trust back before he could betray him. He wasn’t heartless in thinking this way, but looking out for his best interest. His best interest being that of his head staying firming attached to the rest of his body. If Kronos knew that he was about to betray him then Kronos would be sure to stop him anyway that he could. That was not something that Methos desired and so he decided to wait until the perfect opportunity. That opportunity came from poisoned wine and a well latched prison well on holy ground.

In retrospect, he should have taken his head. That would have been what any rational person wanting retribution would do. They would have taken the head and been done with it. Methos didn’t think about it in that way at the time. Kronos was his brother in arms and everything else. He was respected and feared at the same time. He couldn’t take his head, even though he knew that his years would be spent in torment because of his decision. He would always be on the run. He would always be looking over his shoulder. He would always freeze a bit inside when faced with the sense of another immortal. He would always ponder if it was Kronos after him. Was it Kronos, back from his makeshift prison, that wanted revenge for what Methos did? It was Methos who practically destroyed the horsemen. It was him that brought in Cassandra and started to feel for her and want to explore the rest of the world. It was Methos that wanted out at almost any cost. Why wouldn’t Kronos want retribution after all of that?

After thousands of years of not running across Kronos in his travels, Methos finally stopped looking over his shoulder. He thought that he was safe. He thought that he would go another thousand years without ever having to face Kronos again. He thought that his past was behind him and he was thankful for that. He could finally relax for once in his entire life without thinking about any of it. He had made some new acquaintances and he was content in his life. What could go wrong?

Everything. Kronos would make sure of that...
