Giles had taught himself how to live with the emotions of his life. Simple illusions of things no longer there. He was a Watcher, and always would be, and along with the title came death and grief. People slipped into his life and slipped out again. Sometimes they left on their own, while other times death took them from him.

By the time he’d met Lilah, Giles was a jaded man. He’d lived with the haunting memory of Jenny for far too long. His heart was firmly barricaded behind walls of steel because he couldn’t allow himself the pain he’d felt the moment he found her broken in his bed. No more whispered words of love would fall from his mouth, and Lilah didn’t seem to care.

The sex, a perfect combination of sweat and magic, was what they did best. No stings, no attachments, and no worries. Giles could care less if she screwed all of Los Angeles - as long as she gave him what he needed, when he needed it.

It was a dangerous game and one of them was bound to fall.

He just didn’t expect it to be him.

Faith was the one who broke the news to him. Angelus had killed her and Giles’ world shattered around him. Another one lost to the vampire so many followed blindly, not caring about the consequences of what may happen.

He almost prayed for death the night before they fought the First. If the blood was no longer moving through his veins, then he would no longer hurt. Yet, Giles knew he couldn’t allow himself to fail so he fought to save the world that was often cruel to him.

Once the battle was won, and Sunnydale nothing more than a hole in the Earth, he stayed behind to pay his last respects. There was no grave or marker to signify Lilah’s passing. It was almost as if she’d been nothing more than an illusion of his worn-out psyche.

But that didn’t stop him from buying a bottle of her favorite vodka and toasting her in the hotel room where it all began. And after making the toast, Giles walked out of the room, leaving two empty glasses behind.

And once again, he went back to pretending love, or the pain he felt, didn’t matter.
