Do any of you fine people work in the suicide prevention field. I have a bunch of questions that I would love to bounce of your head.

I don't *work* in suicide prevention but it's a pet topic of mine: both of my parents killed themselves. Maybe I can answer your questions.

I'm not a specialist in suicide prevention, but I'm a Master's level licensed therapist, and all of us have to know how to assess for and appropriately deal with suicidality. I also did psych assessments in the Emergency Room of a hospital, where my job was to determine if someone had to be held for 72 hours or were able to go home.

I was toying around with the idea of an alliance between suicide prevention organizations and gun rights / 2nd amendment groups to reduce the amount of suicides with firearms.

50 percent of gun deaths in america are suicides. that means that it's gun owners and their families that are being affected. thus a group that has some credibility with shooters such as various local or regional 2am groups would be useful in spreading suicide prevention methods and recognition to those who might not otherwise be receptive as well as a high risk segment of the population.

It sounds interesting. I've also heard that most gunshot suicides are men, like more than half. Women tend to swallow pills while men like to blow themselves away ( ... )

I'm thinking more in terms of preventative education. and we can't just think of the gun owners themselves, but how to spot the warning signs in other members of their household who would also have access to the weapons. Also, by creating a dialog of suicide prevention in the shooting community it might help to innoculate those who would otherwise be susceptible.

perhaps.

I have a friend who worked the hotline. He's troyology on here. He'd be totally fine getting a call from a random person.

I have a mate who is a mental health nurse and used to work at the local hospital dealing with attempted suicides (post-attempt counselling and mental health assessment). He's quite a helpful chap so I can pass on some questions if you think his experience would be relevant to what you want.
