Just sayin', there are a ton of awesome community gardens in Madison that are very cheap and often free for low income folks, which beats container gardening because you don't have to buy/find containers or soil. Also, they often offer donated seeds and are full of friendly peeps who will help you turn your black thumb green. :)

Also, in case you couldn't tell, I'm super super excited for you because gardening is AWESOME!

The only worry I have about community farms is that I suspect I will actually go to check on them on my porch, while I worry that I will not go to another location often enough.

HOWEVER one of their locations is literally a block from my apartment, which would be an AWESOME option. So maybe I will do both! Thanks SO SO much for the suggestion.

And by "farms" above, I of course meant gardens. Also, I wouldn't qualify for "low income" because I actually get good pay and the only reason I'm broke is because Bank of America is incompetent.

Zucchini and summer squashes are excellent plants to grow for food. During a normal hot, humid summer you can end up pulling a fully ripe squash off every plant every day. Unfortunately, they don't can well. (Canning, contrary to popular fears, is actually quite easy and painless.) But you can freeze pesto and can tomatoes!

I fully intend to make and freeze pesto! My mother did that a lot and it was wonderful.

I would definitely eat as much zucchini as I could grow, so I look forward to that.
