OMG SHOWWWWWWW, NEVER LEAVE ME LIKE THAT AGAIN

OMG, I can't even HANDLE this right now. With so much riding on this episode, though the finale wasn't exactly a cliffhanger, I was EPICALLY impressed with how it played out. Like, I think it's the best premiere since In My Time Of Dying.

Firstly, I absolutely love the way they've gone back to the roots here and made this episode mostly about character drama. Sure, there's lots of plot here, but there weren't huge set pieces, or special effects, but it pure human emotion, pure human drama and I was absolutely thrilled. And it's more than just your Typical Winchester Angst. There's Sam's, utter, crushing guilt. There's (possessed) Bobby's "lose my number after we're done here." Dean's inability to pretend, and his feeling of betrayal. And even more than THAT, there's the way Lucifer mentally traumatizes his vessel before receiving permission. The blood pouring out of the baby's crib, just... wow. Like a punch to the gut, and we know absolutely nothing about this guy. Absolutely incredible. Loved every scene with Lucifer's vessel.

Secondly, it feels already like this season is taking steps to rectify the mistakes made previously. Sam spent 22 freaking episodes last year fraternizing with the enemy, and for months before that, during the summer months after Dean's death. And what's the first thing Sam does when he sees Bobby? Reveals that the fault is his almost immediately, despite Dean's protests. And the FACE he makes when possessed!Bobby tells him to lose his number? OH MY GOD, I THINK I DIED. SAMMY FAAAAAACE! Also, it feels like a return to a very familiar self-loathing!Sam, which is, to me, reminiscent of season one Sam. It's nice to revisit classic!SPN, is it not? Another repercussion they seem to want to deal with is the relationship between Sam and Dean. It's not the same tension that it was last year, and thank God, because it was painful and frustrating. Here we're seeing Dean feeling betrayed, with no trust left in the only family he's got left. And folks, this is heartbreaking. A fight can be bad, sure, but what's always worse is when someone you love is disappointed in you.

Rewatching season four, I was annoyed by some of the decisions Sam was making, but reflecting back, I can empathize. I won't meta too much right here, but Sam's immediate admission of guilt felt admirable, to me, though it's not so much to make himself feel better as it is just in his nature to admit his mistakes. To me, this is a huge step that was absolutely needed to send Sam down a path to absolve him of his sins.

Likewise, I felt like Dean's inability to accept the apology was absolutely needed, and I sympathize with him, as well. Though I still feel like Dean doesn't fully have the right and Sam none at all - Dean's lied plenty of times, too - he's correct in that this wasn't just some small error; Sam's unleashed Lucifer on earth. I love that Dean was instantly able to admit that he couldn't and wouldn't pretend like everything was alright. Not that I think Sam deserves it for making a mistake, but that he deserved to hear it, which is different. This is how Dean feels, and Sam needs to know. I have to admit, though, it shocked me at first, and I love that. (I'm sick of being able to predict when one of them has something to say to the other.) Ugh, and the whole thing hurt so damn hard, like a GIANT FUCKING SWORD to the head, because seriously. This is the most broken we've ever seen them, but it makes me absolutely thrilled and anxious waiting for more episodes so we can see how Sam can redeem himself to his brother. AHHH, ANGST. And angst I'm not rolling my eyes at, this time.

SPEAKING OF SWORDS, WHAT. I kind of like how they dropped this whole, SWORD OF MICHAEL, VESSEL BLAHBLAH thing on Dean without it becoming this whole HOMGOSH! moment in the episode. IT'S JUST STUPID WHEN THERE ARE LIKE FIVE REACTION SHOTS TO WEIRD MYTHOLOGY PLOT POINTS, OKAY? But, but. I know some people have a problem when the writers seem to favor Dean, but it's kind of... I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO THINK. It was fantastic to see Dean stand by his refusal to let an angel basically take his body hostage, but then again... UGH, HOT. What I want this whole Dean-is-an-angel-vessel to mean is that Sam has some more dark side powers and shizzle hiding. I want him to embrace the whole demon thing without the use of any demons to help. To take what he's learned and develop his own methods. That's very Luke Skywalker, and I dig it, and I hope that's what happens so I can forgive Dean being a MYSTERIOUSLY PREDESTINED ANGEL VESSEL. Even if it's hot. Maybe because I always thought Sam was going to be Gabriel the Archangel or something, but whateverrrr. ANYWAY. DARK!SAM AND LIGHT!DEAN IS STILL KIND OF AWESOME AS LONG AS THEY'RE ON THE SAME SIDE.

More things of importance:

CASTIEL. OH. MY. GOD. I SCREAMED SO FUCKING HARD. I like that Misha still complains about Castiel being a pussy AND THEN THAT HAPPENS. HE ROCKED THOSE BITCHES LIKE THEY WERE RAG DOLLS. WHUT WHUT!

THE. TITLE. CARD. IS. EPIC. OMG OMG OMG THE BLOOOOOD! I HOPE THIS IS FOREBODING IN SOME WAY OR IT'S LIKE... WHATEVER BUT IT'S SO FUCKING COOL DSFJLHSDLKJF IT'S MY NEW FAVOURITE NEXT TO SEASON THREE'S. AHHHH I WANNA REWATCH JUST TO SEE IT AGAINSKLFJHSLKDJHFLSDHLFJHSDKJLFS, FLAILLLLLLLLLLLLLL.

EDIT EDIT EDIT:

ADFJLDSHLFHDSLHFLSJDHFS I COULD STARE AT THIS ALL. DAY. LONG!!!!

OKAY, THAT'S ALL I GOT. I THINK. As always, I love and encourage comments and discussion, even if you violently disagree!
