I know I keep doing this when I come back and actually update, but I am trying to get back into LJ. Every new defriend I get for being inactive makes me sad so I wanna come back here. :[

But anyhoo, I saw Toy Story 3 last night. ( Briefish thoughts, this time. Not spoilery! )

It is not necessary to plaster on pop culture joke after pop culture joke, as Toy Story 3 illustrates
This is what separates Pixar stories from Dreamworks. And I say "stories" deliberately and not films, because the storytelling (not just the quality of animation) is what makes the Toy Story series timeless.

The thing about 3D animation is that you can't ignore the principles of animation, even if your characters are realistic. That means you have to add squash and stretch, add more weight in certain moments and more movement, even if it isn't realistic.
SO MUCH WORD. Understanding that delicate balance between traditional animation and photorealism is what really sells Pixar's work. Sometimes you need to exaggerate the movement to make it look more natural.

OMG YES LET ME GO DORKY ARTIST ON YOU, FELLOW ARTIST.

Dreamworks has made one film I was impressed with, and that was Kung Fu Panda, a movie that stunned EVERYONE when it had no pop culture references. NOT EVEN ONE.

UGH OMFG YESSS. I'm so glad someone else understands my pain, because as much as I love video games, I fucking cannot stand the animation in 90% of them. Since the huge, huge majority of games these days are photorealistic with hugely realistic main characters, they keep movements super real and it's just so light and stagnant and I hate it. But it's fantastic how these characters move, like they're really made from plastic and have ball joints and oh man, so much attention to detail. ♥

FFFFFFFFFFFF I'M GETTING ALL TEARY NOW AND I HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN THIS FILM YET ;_____________;

This is a wonderful (non-spoilery yay!) review. I've become so cynical and jaded about films in the last few years (the benefits of being a Film Major...? :p) and I fully expected Toy Story 3 to be another shitty sequel among countless shitty sequels. It makes me.....god, SO HAPPY that this is not the case. I was one of those kids who grew up with Toy Story, and the idea that they might retroactively ruin its brilliance made me so upset. GODDDD I REALLY NEED TO SEE THIS NOW /o\

Is it worth seeing it in 3D? I'm a bit dubious about it, mainly because it's more expensive, so is it worth it, when the 2D gets the story across just fine.

But 2 weeks til TS3 comes out, can't wait! The thing about Pixar sequels is you just know they wouldn't have made it if they didn't have something absolutely golden up their sleeves; so all the people pulling faces at a crappy sequel, you can go, Hey, it's Pixar, trust them =D

I couldn't agree with you more about this film. It really struck me in a way that I didn't realize was possible. In a lot of ways, I'm about to make that transition which Andy makes in the film, and it made me go home and reflect about things that I was leaving behind.

I'm no animator and I don't really know the first thing about visual art critique, but I could tell that the film had a certain attention to detail and I appreciated that a lot.

Honestly, you're an excellent writer and you always manage to pour your soul out onto the page. I always love reading these.
