Riot Grrrlz in Egypt

My LJ-friend MK posted a wonderful set of punchy sentences from "Girls to the Front: The True Story of the Riot Grrrl Revolution" by Sara Marcus. I found three that brought focus for me.

"In her kiss, I taste the revolution!" (Kathleen Hanna)- if you're intrigued, go see the comment I just put up on MK's post;

"If being honest means being mean . . . it's gonna be a cruel revolution." - the Grrrlz were sincere, but they haven't really changed our lives, I'm sorry to say;

"This very moment contains all you need. Everything you're hearing right now, where you are . . . this is the sound of a revolution."

The last one, of course, rings especially true after yesterday's overthrow of Mubarak. In fact, watching maybe 15 hours of all-Egypt-all-the-time TV, one thing I especially cherished was watching the Egyptian girls and women, whether Westernized or traditional, veiled or ponytailed. They were the revolution -- even if the men around them didn't know it. (I'm not talking about those in their culture who would actually try to deny them their rights; they are ignorant men, invested in the wrong thing. They WILL fail.)

Thanks, MK!
