12. Tattoo

There were a lot of things Junsu swore to himself he would never do. Smoke, drink, sleep around, and get a tattoo. First of all, singing defined him as a person. Taking away his singing ability left him with his awkwardness, and soccer. Secondly, his soccer remained the only way he could stay famous if his singing vanished. He practically had innocence and chastity trademarked since his debut, and he didn’t like unnecessary pain. All his fears and dislikes, everything he rejected, Jaejoong seemed to represent all of that.

They all knew the damage it could do to them, the smoking killing their lungs and the drinking making them age instantly, but Junsu couldn’t fathom why Jaejoong still stubbornly continued.

“Hyung, please, just for one night, can you not drink while having dinner?” He and Jaejoong exchanged glances at the dinner table. Perhaps he had asked one too many times, because tonight, after this battle had raged for the fifth day in a row, Jaejoong got up and went out to the balcony.

He’s smoking, Junsu thought. He was right. Behind the curtains he could see the small artistic puffs of smoke coming from Jaejoong’s mouth. Junsu really couldn’t understand why Jaejoong had to do all those irritating things.

One thing his brother had taught him was that the whole world was not linked together like twins were, he actually had to ask people how they were feeling or he’d always remain clueless and tongue-tied around others.

“You know why I don’t act like you do, Hyung.” He swore he heard Jaejoong say something like, ‘because you’re a pious Christian bitch,’ but he might have just misheard the wind. “But hyung, I don’t why you do. Please, open up to me.” For once it seemed like the clumsy duckbutt managed to say the right things.

Jaejoong took his time finishing his cigarette, but he made sure to keep Junsu entertained enough to stay. He removed his shirt, eyeing Junsu who made unsatisfactory lackluster faces. Shaking his head, he put the cigarette out in a convenient ashtray and took a seat in a rusty lawn chair, waiting for Junsu to do the same.

The summer night was hot and humid, but what really made Junsu uncomfortable was how Jaejoong seemed to stare right through him. “Hyung,” he started when Jaejoong cut him off.

“It numbs me.”

“What?”

“The smoking and the drinking, it numbs me. Junsu, Yoochun and I have a lot of stress. You have a lot of stress too, but you are much better at venting that we are.” Jaejoong pulled out another cigarette as his words started to shake. “From dealing with the sasaengs to trying to get offers to perform on shows, we have a lot of things to manage. Back at SM, we didn’t really have the opportunity to find a healthy way to relax, so we turned to other things.” Jaejoong started shaking, and it was definitely not caused by the wind.

Junsu reached out for him, wanting to cradle his head or something, anything. “Hyung.”

“We learned what was really stupid quickly. Then one day I got that tattoo on my back and I suddenly felt like ‘ah, there really is nothing as painful as life.’ That wouldn’t do Junsu, I could not continue on like that. I like to drink because when I actually get drunk, there is this wonderful buzzing in my head that thinks everything is fucking perfect. When I smoke, my nerves go dead and all I feel is emptiness. It stops hurting, Junsu, can you accept that?”

“Hyung, I’m sorry.” Junsu slipped into the lawn chair beside Jaejoong and hugged him from the side. All they did was hug, but between the unfinished cigarette sitting in the suddenly far away ashtray and the way Junsu smelled, Jaejoong started to get too antsy for just that.

“And ya know, I’d stop sleeping around if the person I liked would acknowledge my feelings.” Junsu looked up perplexed and gave Jaejoong the perfect opportunity to kiss him. The duckbutt didn’t reject it, sliding his lips over Jaejoong, finding the rhythm easily.
