19. Flowers

The only times he ever had to leave his house was when the mail came, and always under the watchful eye of the moon. He could cross the distance between his front door and the mailbox in three steps, so he didn’t even consider it leaving his house. The outside world bothered him, so much so that he hadn’t left his property in almost six years. News stations intruded, the grocer mocked him, his neighbors gossiped enough to sin, and the children called him a monster. Only the mailman cared.

That wonderful man didn’t pry or try and peek in through his shutters. He didn’t knock on the door and demand to see the house owner, nor did he engage in any of the antics Junsu’s aggressors did. If anything, the mailman was the only reason Junsu was still alive; he was the closest he’d had to a friend in a long time. The evidence lied in the handwritten letters he left for Junsu.

Dear Junsu,

The weather today is perfect for delivering our ancient form of communication. I say that, but it is so hot, I’m sweating through my uniform! Luckily I pass by the convenience store that sells my favorite ice cream, so I can cool off with that. How are you keeping cool this summer? Like I suspect, you are using the air conditioner all day and night long? It sounds nice, but expensive! I’m glad the post office keeps the air conditioner on so the letters and packages don’t go bad, just like books in a library.

My sisters have been nagging me to settle down and raise a family, but they can’t possibly understand my preferences in life. Working six days a week is fun and worth my time, and I love my job. Where it takes me and who it lets me meet. I also love to look at all the junk mail people get! It’s ridiculous how many coupons I deliver everyday.

I noticed some weeds popping out around in the streets all around the neighborhood, perhaps someone will pull them out one day? I hope they do it soon before the weeds sprout flowers and the little girls beg that they continue to grow. It does look pretty when it gets out of hand, though. My neighbors have let the weeds in their small little backyard turn into a colorful garden of yellow, pink, and purple.

Well, I hope you stay healthy and safe.

Sincerely,

Jaejoong

He was saint like, caring for Junsu like an angel, no, Mother Theresa herself! But Junsu would never admit it; in fact, he had never written a reply to Jaejoong. His fears bottled up inside told him that Jaejoong would abandon him the moment he saw how odd Junsu was. Rational or not, if he confessed his feelings of gratitude and cherishment, he felt like Jaejoong would turn into just another gossiper and judge, ridiculing Junsu’s innocent side. Six years -six years since Junsu had last talked to anyone in person. Six years since he shared smiles and laughter and felt good afterward, not being the butt of the joke.

No, Junsu had never written a reply, choosing to instead watch from behind his curtains whenever the mail came, and his silence sometimes unnerved Jaejoong.

Dear Junsu,

I’m sorry to always pester you with my useless letters, but I always think that you could use some silly humor in your days. Sorry to pry, but I do see all who writes to you, and most of it is bills and not much family business. It seems lonely to me, a mailman, but in this age of technology, who knows, maybe you prefer e-mail or other SNS communication? Sometimes I fear that my job will not be necessary for much longer.

We all have troubles and worries, and it is better to share them than keep them locked inside. It’s dangerous for such waging emotions to wreck out hearts. I implore, take care of yourself. The challenges we face everyday mean nothing if we don’t face them head on and full throttle. Just the same, embrace everything thrown at you with peace.

Sincerely,

Jaejoong

A few times Jaejoong had even left treats with his letters. Around Christmas time he delivered his very own personal holiday greeting card along with delicious homemade cookies. His letter that time claimed he had made them himself because he didn’t have a girlfriend to do something like. Knowing he was single made Junsu feel good enough to actually eat the little delights. The most recent even occurred on Valentines Day when Jaejoong popped a few truffles into a bag and topped it off with a flattering red ribbon. His card had X’s and O’s with a childishly drawn blushing Jaejoong and a sappy love poem.

White day reared its head in Junsu’s mind, and the courage to finally reply to Jaejoong’s many advances started to take shape. The idea formed, and the weird butterflies died down the more he thought it out. First he’d need to call someone because he couldn’t get it in his own home, that’s for sure. Next, he’d have to plan exactly when, because surely it would perish outside, even in the cool March air. Of course, he knew Jaejoong’s delivery schedule perfectly, having watched the man since he started in his neighborhood.

Come White Day, Junsu had done socialized more than he had since graduation from high school.

Dear Jaejoong,

Thank you for always encouraging me with life. Your letters bring me hope and happiness, helping me wake up every morning. I don’t know how you live with such optimism; I stopped believing in man a long time ago. That is, until you started to care for me. There are many fears and doubts trying to win over me, but you always rally my confidence and build my spirit.

Thank you for always be quirky and weird, giving me great joy everyday. Except Sunday, no post on Sunday. I do hope this is better than the weeds in the streets.

Love,

Junsu

The love at the end expressed his confession just a little, but the real declaration came from the gentle white rose resting in the small space of Junsu’s mailbox just waiting to be taken home by a loving man.
