Just as I promised, here's my report of Katsucon 2010!
(Pics will be towards the end of the post.)
Friday: Me and Theo managed to get to the Gaylord around 8am and were thrown off by the size of the place. It was large! It looked like an oversized mall in there! The line for at door registration wasn't as long as the pre-reg line. I mean, it was ridiculous. The pre-reg line trumped the hell out of the at door line. Then again, that was because the physical badges didn't come in on time. So all the pre-reg people had to wait til' Friday to pick up their badges. Although, anyone who went to reg that morning were given vouchers. The badges still didn't arrive that morning, so you had to trade those in when they finally arrived. Which happened around 12pm. Any who, went around the dealer's room for a few hours checking out the merchandise. Then went and saw the video game area. It was okay. The setup was kinda cramped for the amount of space they had. Ran into James and Big Momma Rachel. James was behind the Nekocon table and Rachel was working the artist alley reg table. She wasn't able to set up her table until near the end of the day. I was able to go to the Tony Oliver Q&A panel around 3pm. It was fun! Questions about Robotech and Power Rangers were thrown out and he answered them in good humor! Too bad I missed his autograph session. The other nagging thing was the program doesn't mention when and where certain autograph sessions were happening. I went to watch the first 4 english dubbed episodes of Slayers Revolution and Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood afterward. The nice thing was that the ADR director for Funimation, Vic Mignona, voice of Ed, and Maxey Whitehead, the new voice for Al, were there after the 4th FMA:BH episode ended! They did a little Q&A afterward. Maxey did a pretty good job being the new voice for Alphonse. Granted, it feels different, but what can you do? Child voice actors have to grow up sometime.
Saturday: Went out in my Roy Mustang cos-play, once again. As much as I said I would retire the outfit, I decided to bring it out for this year. Got my picture taken a LOT more than last year! I made up to Vic's Q&A panel that morning and it was great! He answered so many questions, made so many fan-girls swoon speaking as Dark and Tomaki, and told us he was a complete original series Trekkie! He also mentioned working on the online episodes that continue the original series. Afterward, I rushed down to the area where Vic was signing autographs. Got into a good spot in line and ran into my "stalker" while I was there. I let her get in front of me and we talked while waiting. Any way, when I got to Vic next, I showed him what I wanted him to autograph. It was the recent Ed Elric PlayArtsKai fig from Squenix. He "melted" when he saw that! He gladly signed it and I took a picture with him! From there, I had my picture taken by these two girls who were cos-playing as Riza! ;)
Of course, we had to move a couple times since the con-worker there kept telling us we were still in the way for people to get out of line. So after that, I managed to take their picture and would run into them later that night and Sunday morning. One of them mentioned that some con-goer destroyed a glass top table in the lobby and was arrested. Most of the night was me getting my picture taken and take pictures of others through the night. I even got a hug from a girl who mistaken me from a Roy in the cos-play masquerade. Those group of girls commented that I made a pretty good Roy regardless! I mostly hung around the game room most of the night watching a friend in the BlazBlue tournament and watched Rin: Daughters of Mesmonyne.
Sunday: This was possibly the least favorite of my days. The only good part was in the morning was when I checked the Robotech panel and managed to talk with Tony Oliver(finally!)! And get a picture with him! :D I was so happy to catch up with him! After that, it was mostly trying to get our shit together since James, thankfully, told me that check was at 11AM. Which the hotel didn't specify to well. I had to get my stuff and Theo's stuff, because he had to go to church earlier that morning. Thankfully, we checked out in time and dropped my stuff off in his dad's car and they proceeded to church. I hung around the game room for most of the day even after Theo got back. Saw some sick Tatsunoko vs. Capcom playing in there. When we were ready to go around 3pm, Theo's dad wasn't picking his phone and waited til 3:30 when finally called back. I was able to get to the Metro by 4pm and haul my stuff through the remaining snow.
Alrighty, enough with the rant. Here's the pictures!:
*note: despite how I looked in these pictures, I actually had a great time having my picture taken with these people. I just need to work on smiling for the camera...
This is Tony Oliver! The man who voiced Rick Hunter in Robotech, Hibiki Tokai in Vandread, Bang Shishigami in BlazBlue and wrote for the "Mighty Morphin'" Power Rangers series! This guy is another legend in my book!
And here's Vic Mignona, the voice of Ed Elric! This man was cool! I think he enjoyed having his picture taken with me as Roy. And quite fitting considering! Lol! And this is the Ed fig I had him sign:
These are the two Riza's I was talking about:
I wish the picture turned out better...but I'm really crappy when taking pictures without blurring. The picture with the three of us was taken by one those girl's cameras. So I don't have that one, unfortunately.
Edgeworth with his new game!
A really awesome Mia!
Good ol' Marth and zero suit Samus.
A random Sakura.
A (blurred...) pic of Chipp and Ky from Guilty Gear.
A cute pic of Lina Inverse!
And finally:
Dr. Clayton Forrester from MST3K! A damn good one too!
Despite the disorganization of the con and the strictness and distance of the hotel, I really enjoyed myself! Now to go through con-withdraw...
Oh, just to throw it out there, I decided to join Facebook. If you know my name, you'll find me. Otherwise, let me know or I'll find you.
Later!
