I read the whole Twilight series, and I found that if I completely detached myself from reality and kind of read it like a bad teen romance novel, it worked. You basically can't compare it to "good" vampire literature...if Anne Rice hadn't become a hardcore christian, I am sure she would probably have challenged Stephanie Meyer and her glittery vamps to a grudge match. I do, however, enjoy what she did with werewolf society. It almost seems that she did research on them and actually coordinated it into the story. But really, drop Twilight, pick up Charlaine Harris' vampire series (if you haven't already) and enjoy excellent REAL vampire fiction. (yes, those vampires still eat people and burn in the sun.)
