Setting the book back neatly on the bookshelf, he glanced at the bottle of absinthe, untouched since the previous night, and the unopened bottle of vintage merlot on the table. He could already tell his new friend would be in need of a drink.
He opened the door, inviting the other man in. In contrast to Dorian's room, Adrian's was all cold marble and minimalism, tasteful interior decorating, of course, but for the most part, it gave the impression of a museum more than it did a bedroom. The few statues and busts from antiquity only added to that effect. He smiled courteously, inviting the other inside.

Adrian would sense the truth of this from his expression, one of disgust, and his demeanor, lacking introductions and calm.

"Tell me about it," he said, voice laced with sympathy. Dorian was obviously quite frazzled, something he was perhaps unused to, being so new to the barge. Adrian could empathize. He himself had had a number of unpleasant experiences, but nothing so unpleasant as what Dorian had experienced, as he was about to find out.

He collected his thoughts for a moment and looked at Adrian. Here and now was normal, tasteful, pristine. Adrian was cultured, well mannered and gentlemanly. Yet the instant he left and returned to the barge at large, he would be amidst animals and heathens.
He spilled his troubles at once, no longer able to keep it all in, "My warden is intolerably rude, I am running out of cigarettes, and as if that weren't enough, someone shat in the shower."
He looked desperate for someone to share in his disgust.
