Wooyoung sat, splayed out, at the court house table. His life, falling apart in front of him. Who that at such a young age he would be going through this? He was only a kid and yet he was experiencing thee trails of a grown man. At 19, Wooyoung was finalizing his annulment with Nichkhun. He thought they were happy but of course that didn’t seem to be the problem.
----
Khun signed his name to his term paper - Nichkhun Jang - and handed it into his teacher, marking the end of his long and strenuous freshman year of college. He rushed out of his classroom and headed to the parking lot, eager to see his husband, but overriding his eagerness was nervousness.
Khun opened the building doors and was greeted by the sight of Wooyoung sitting on the hood of his car. Once he spotted him, he waved Khun over. Khun smiled and ran to the car, jumping on the hood and giving his husband the biggest hug he could muster. Wooyoung pulled away and stared at the man who clung to him moments ago. They hadn’t seen each other in months, three to be exact, and it was more than he could bear.
He cupped the side of Khuns face and connected their lips. If it wasn’t for the limited supply of oxygen, they probably would have never let go, but when they both couldn’t endure it anymore, they pulled away.
“I missed you.” Wooyoung laughed.
“Same.” Khun smiled, but there was something wrong and Wooyoung could tell.
“What’s up?”
“Um…”
How was he supposed to say this? He was in one of those ‘have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too’ situations and he wasn’t sure how to break the news to Wooyoung. Khun wanted an annulment, but he wanted to keep Wooyoung as a boyfriend, which he knew wasn’t going to fly.
“I just had a really hard year.”
“Yeah, me too, but thank god it’s over!!!!!!!!!” Wooyoung screamed at the top of his lungs.
Khun laughed.
“How about we get out of here ad go celebrate the summer?”
Wooyoung slid off the top of his car. Khun hesitated.
“I want an annulment.” He blurted out.
Wooyoung walked around to his side of the car and then stopped, what he just heard sinking in.
“What?”
“I want an annulment.”
Khun still hadn’t moved from the top of the car. Wooyoung wasn’t sure how to handle what he was hearing, so he just stood there.
“Why?”
Khun bowed his head. He wasn’t really sure why, but he knew that he didn’t feel right.
“I just don’t want to be married anymore.”
Wooyoung couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“What do you think this is?” He asked, thrusting his ring finger in Khun’s face. “Do you think this is some mark written in ink? Some thing you can rub off when you get tired of it? Something that will leave a stain on you? No Khun, this will never wipe off!!”
Khun looked at his and Wooyoung’s wedding bands, the same bands that they rushed out to buy right before their marriage.
“Wooyoung, it’s not that I don’t want to be with you, I just don’t want to be married.”
“Oh that makes me feel so much better. You still want me; you just don’t want to be married to me. No khun, just…no”
“Why can’t you see where I’m coming from?”
“Why can’t you see where I’m coming from? You can’t have your cake and eat it too.”
He knew Wooyoung was going to say this, but he was going to try his hardest to get both.
“I love you Wooyoung, I really do. I can’t imagine my life without you, but I just can’t be married right now. We have our whole lives ahead of us, but if you don’t want to stay with me, I understand.”
“I really don’t believe this. Three months ago, this was everything that you could have possibly wanted. Why put me through this? Why let me drive to the court house? Why let me write out vows that I obviously meant, but you must have taken as a joke. Why?”
Khun really wished this had gone better, but he knew that wasn’t a possibility from the start. Breaking Wooyoung’s heart was something he never wanted to do, but if that was what he had to do to be happy, then maybe it was for the best.
Khun slid off the roof of Wooyoung’s car.
“I never meant to hurt you Wooyong and I never took any of this as a joke. You are and probably will always be the only person I’ve ever loved, but I need to do this. I’m sorry.”
Khun turned and began to walk out of the parking lot.
“Where are you going?” Wooyoung asked.
“I’m going to take the bus home.”
“No. I’ll drive you. Let me do this last thing…as your husband.”
---
“30 days.”
Wooyoung looked up at the sound of the judge’s voice.
“Excuse me?”
“30 days and your annulment will be final.”
Wooyoung looked over to Khun’s side of the room. He sat with his parents. Never once did he look at him, the whole time he kept his head down. Coward, Wooyoung thought and then took it back. This whole situation really was taking a toll on him and his heart.
“Thank you.”
For the first time Wooyoung locked eyes with Khun as he spoke.
“Now, if in those 30 days you decide that you don’t want a divorce, please come in as soon as possible.”
Wooyoung stared at Khun, hopeful.
“Thank you.” Khun spoke again and got up, his parents following him.
Once they left the room, Wooyoung rose.
“Thank you.”
The judge nodded his head and Wooyoung exited the room. He was greeted by Khun and his family sitting on the bench outside. He wanted so badly to try and talk him out of this again, what would be the point? They had already tried and Wooyoung knew just how serious Khun was when he received the annulment papers. He looked at Khun once again and smiled. Khun stared blankly, and then smiled back. No, he wouldn’t bother Khun anymore and if one day they did get back together, then they would pick up from there, but for now the last name Jang would come back to its original owner. Broken, but not completely shattered.
