You're all selfish.

No really.
I mean it.
All of you.
Every last one.

But I don't mean that in a bad way.
;)

One of these days I'll get around to writing up my big rant on the fabrication that is altruismBut in the meantime, I'll just keep picking away at it. It's a scab that very few people can reach ( Read more... )

Not a whole lot, no.

Didn't like what I have seen of it. There are a number of useful and intelligent premises, from what I've seen, but large portions of his stuff were either highly plagarized, or simplifications of notions that have occurred to other philosophers/writers.
Granted, a lot of what people learn and take into their own philosophy may be consolidated from the teachings of others...but I've seen his themes done better elsewhere.

(sorry for the delay)

well my day was going ok......but now i feel kinda guilty for giving you a drawing i did of myself because "I" wanted you to have it.......but its true what you are saying.

It is just the nature of people, the nature of most situations, and the nature of the world to act and think this way. My own wants and desires (even if it is for someone else to be happy) will always come before others. People have to feel moved to do something before they will even consider acting on it. It is the "acting on it" part that makes us all selfish beings.

I have never thought about this before now, and i will probably never think about it again, but you are right.

people connect connotations to certain words. They tend to associate certain feelings with certain words. The word selfish has gotten such a bad connotation that is difficult for most people to hear it and not think negatively towards it.

Like the word cult. It actually has a very interesting definition.
Cult: Latin cultus, worship, from past participle of colere, to cultivate. See kwel-1 in Indo-European Roots.] Its meaning is purely benevolent. Since it has been used to describe extremists and other religious sects that are frowned upon, it has recieved and retained its negative stigma.

Sticks and stones...

I cut the pie right!

In my world, these two things are almost one in the same. For I too am a creature of pure emotions. I find it hard to think with my brain, and then when I do, it makes me sad. I will admit to being selfish. I have known this for a very long time. On the exterior, I may resemble a good, generous woman. However, I have strived for that. I have seen moments in life where I could give someone something, whether it be a smile, money, or a gift, and I have siezed it, in an effort to make myself appear sweet and kind. Truthfully, I do not always feel so much like a sweet or kind person. I know the potential that lies far beneath. But I wouldn't want anyone else to know that person because I know how much that would hurt them; the same way it has hurt me in the past ( ... )
