Selfish and self-centered are two closely-related, yet very different, things. Doing things for selfish reasons is not necessarily a bad thing, though it is often assigned that connotation. It's simply the act of self-preservation and acting in one's own best interests after considering the implications of the decision on everyone. The problems come when too many things are done for self-centered reasons, in which one makes decisions specifically to benefit oneself, with no consideration of, or even specific disregard for, others.

I agree with lil_m_moses on the point that the word "selfishness" carries negative connotations, but like other character traits, they can be a negative in some situations and positive, or self-preserving, in others.

It truly is a curse sometimes to delve into the recesses of the human mind and realize that you need to be the things you hate in order to survive, and that usually the qualities you loathe in others are things you are scared you are.

er something like that.

To deny altruism is to be completely self-centered. You are in denial.

To deny altruism is to be completely self-aware. You are in denial.

And, if you are going to hide your identity...then don't post in my journal, lardnugget.
