WordPress is good for public stuff. LJ is good for Private stuff. You may notice that the username I'm replying to you with right now tezmillertm is a secret LJ. Originally I started it for organisational purposes (only follow the people who follow me, which is incredibly egotistical, I know ;-) ), but it's ended up being quite helpful. I can bitch about my family and the blogosphere relatively freely ;-)
Because I can't think up creative usernames, I stuck with my name, and added initials to differentiate it. But you're married and such, so I don't know what you'd do... then again, Tez Miller is not actually my real name, but it's who I think of myself as ;-)
What little I've used Wordpress, I like it. It's pretty intuitive, and yes, you can do a lot more with it. And, y'know, you have a brain twin who knows how knows how to design and code WP templates... ;-) Just tossing that out there. *g*
As for what to call it or what user name to go with, I, too, like Saunsaucie. Yeah, it's hard for some people to spell and pronounce, but your full name is interesting and unique, which is always a good thing when you're a writer, IMO. Plus, you can always use meta tags, which will direct searches to your website, and in those you can put all kinds of misspellings of your name to try to ensure that even if someone leaves out a U or an A or puts in an extra S or something that they'll find your blog.

The technical expertise required for the wordpress.org version gets a lot less once you get a server and get it installed on that server. And in this day and age, most any reputable server will auto-install it for you as part of their service. Once you're at that point, nearly everything can be done through the graphical interface. LJ's graphical interface, in my opinion, is a lot harder to understand than wordpress's--so I think you'd be fine in that respect. However, as I understand it, all of LJ's functionality is encapsulated within the one interface, whereas with WordPress, you'll find yourself doing a lot of running back and forth from the wordpress.org theme browser and the wordpress.org plugins directory and your wordpress interface, downloading and setting up pieces of the vast array of wordpress functionality that don't come pre-installed

So, right when I go around pitching ElegantThemes to everyone, I found a new pile of beautiful themes -- in Mike's case, for reference in original design more than for direct use. But, wow:

A quick question about hosting, because Greg is looking into web hosts for some project of his: can you elaborate on GoDaddy? He says they're the cheapest around.
I'll basically echo what everyone else has said. Wordpress.com worked for me for a while, but I'm really glad I moved to the downloaded version because it is much more customizable. If you *want* to do coding stuff, you can, but it's really set up very nicely to do most everything with a graphic interface, so you shouldn't have any difficulties from a technical standpoint on the learning curve. There are TONS of plugins, so you can do just about anything--but you can always waste tons of time digging through all the options.
I do my hosting through BlueHost.com, and I just renewed my contract for 2 years at $8 a month. Worth it, to me, and they've been great in terms of customer service and answering questions on the very few occasions when I've needed it.
And for what it's worth I'm with all those who like Saunsaucie and think you should keep it. I also have never had trouble spelling it. :)

Any thoughts on creating something new versus staying in LJ? Any user name suggestions? :)

Of course, Tez Miller does have a fantastically lovely ring to it. :)
