Few words have more potential to put your brain on over-drive than, "I need to tell you something."
Is she broke? Is she secretly married to the Kendell's Kid? Is she pregnant? Does she know that we secretly throw away the cookies that she keeps making every Christmas? Did she find out the car we gifted her was way cheaper than what we told her? Maybe she realized that the cat wasn't abducted by aliens.
"Mom. Dad. I got a new job."
"Wow! Congratulations."
Phew! This is not so bad. Or so I thought. "I had applied for a job in New York. And you are now looking at the Senior Designer at Double Take."
"That's so cool. Wait. Did you say New York?"
"Hahaaa. I see what you did there dad. Nice."
"No I am serious sweety. Why? Why New York? You just came back after finishing college. Is your current job not paying enough? I could talk to Sal about a hike. His cousin Jeff and I were in the same class in junior high."
"Dad. It's not about the money. It's about following my passion."
"But sweety, you are working at a clothing store here as well. You could design stuff here as well. Let your dad talk to his friend and see what can be done."
"Mom, I told you. It's not about the money. Irrespective of how much I try, I don't think there is any establishment here that will help me realize my full potential."
"How about if we opened our own fashion line? I could always dig into the savings. If that falls short, we could always apply for a loan. "
"Wait. We have savings? When were you planning on telling me about this, Henry? "
"Soon enough. What say sweety? Is that a plan or what!"
"Dad, Mom, I know how much you love me, but there is such a thing as 'letting go'. If I had done aerospace engineering, you would have definitely wanted to build my own space research organisation here."
"We are not that crazy darling. Neither that rich."
"I don't believe that Henry. Who knows how much you have saved behind my back?"
"Not now Irene. We are trying to help our daughter figure out what she wants to do."
"No dad. You are trying to make me stay here. That's all. Dad think about the exposure I could get in New York. I can't get the same here in Canandaigua. I can't see myself designing to just this demographic. Do you really think people in our town would pay three thousand dollars for a wedding dress?"
"Goodness me. You're telling me that people actually pay that much for a bridal gown?"
"I'm just throwing random figures guys. But that still means I can make things that a lot of people would appreciate."
"That is all fine, sweety, but I thought that we were done with being far away."
"I know this is hard for everyone. Even for me. It’s planned. It’s thought-out. I gone through the finances and everything. I'll just need a week before joining to look for apartments."
"You'd rather live in an apartment than a house? There will be a lot of responsibility kiddo. We will not be at your beck and call"
"That's not so bad dad. I did share my room when I was at the college."
"True. But you did call us every few days asking how to make ice. With all the education we provided you, we thought you would at least have googled it."
"That never happened mom."
"I know. I just saw a meme which I thought would make a great story to tell friends."
"You what? So not cool."
"Your mom's just kidding. On the other hand, I am not. I can talk to Sal and set up a sweet hike."
"Thanks but no thanks dad. This is something I really really wanna do. It's not like I am moving to another country. New York is just a five hour drive. I could drop in once in a while. Or maybe you guys can come there."
"That would be great. By the way I call dibs on the room. I always wanted a man cave in the house. The guys can get together for poker on weekends. Catch the Superbowl. Do you need packing sweety. Daddy would be more than happy to help."
"I so think I was adopted."
