So, I talked with julian_griffith and arranged to do a guestblog for her (I already started the essay!) and she asked me to e-mail her if/when she can do a promo on my blog. Decide what you want from this. Quid pro quo? Encourage visitors to your blog? Once you know why you want it, that might help decide what to do.
I've gone for interviews only from guests at my blog so that there's a set 'feel' to those posts. Other blogs I've guested at offer the choice; it's what works for them.
As an idea, you might want to trawl about some of the other blogs where they have guest authors/posts and see what sort of things peeps are doing.
