I feel the same way, but it truly is a huge issue. I looked at the polls and the people are divided almost perfectly:
31% Support gay marriage 30% Support gay civil union 32% Do not support same-sex union of any kind.
Hmm, I guess that 7% didn't know or care. Either that or my memory is a bit off.
Anyway, you really can't be surprised by this. We talked about this in European history class. If about one half of the country wants something that the other half does not, it always escalates into a huge issue. For example, near the end of the French Revolution, hundreds of people voted on whether or not to kill Louis XVI. The result: the pro-death vote won by one vote. I had a hypothesis once that there may somehow exist a perfect balance of opinions, such that, if one person felt very strongly in one direction, there would have to be another person who felt equally strongly in the opposite direction--or maybe two who felt moderately strongly in the opposite direction.
