30 days meme: Day 6, "Hobbies"

Oct 05, 2010 23:13

I've been mulling over this entry all day, and not getting very far. In fact, I'm finding this one so difficult that I actually looked up the definition of hobby, in the hopes that it would provide some guidance. Unsurprisingly, it did not tell me anything new - no guidance there. So here I sit at 9:39 pm, with 2 hours and 20 minutes to come up ( Read more... )

Sounds to me like walking is a hobby we share. I also zone out into day-dream land when I walk. Hours just slip by unnoticed. Walking cheers me up and helps me get in touch with my sub conscious.

I'm curious where you think gaming falls... 'cause if it's your main occupation... dam. Where can I get a gig like that? :)

Huh. How did I not include gaming?

I guess... it just feels like a way of socializing. Like going out to dinner or a movie, except more exciting. :)

That's fair. A lot of the things that would rightly be considered hobbies, people don't think of as hobbies, I suspect. In part because of how separated what we want to do, and what we do for a living have become, I think people mistake hobbies for 'what I do naturally.'

If we did what we would do naturally as a primary occupation, however, we would call it our 'job' (and be profoundly lucky). But the definition you found in the dictionary suggests: If you do it, enjoy it, and don't derive the majority of your income from it - it's a hobby. :)

Coincidentally, Chinese and Latin are two languages I'm constantly wishing I could study further. If you figure out how to squeeze a couple extra days into the week, would you let me know?

How much Latin have you studied?

As soon as I figure out how to manipulate time, I'll call you. :)

I studied 4 years of it in school, but I remember very little of that. I definitely could use the brush-up.

I once listed my hobbies as "reading, computer games, reading, playing RPGs, reading, writing computer programs, reading, general research, building models and, oh yeah, reading."

So yeah, I'm one of those people who has two of his hobbies as parts of his job (the computer programming and research). And I've unfortunately fallen out of the model building, I should really get back to that.
