well, Singer is sort of the classic brand, but it has been a very long time since I priced out such things. I think that is a fairly reasonable price range for a decent machine.

I purchased a Kenmore 15258 for around two hundred dollars after my old Kenmore died. I give it a positive recommendation. It's nothing special, but it gets the job done. It takes thick denims and light tulle with equal amounts of ease.

stay away from singer's machines and brother's these days - they're both almost all plastic and break very easily

what types of fabrics and finished products are you thinking of making? things like kilts and lightweight leather will put different demands on a machine than brocaded garb, and while i can make some good general recs, i can give better ones if i know that

as far as brands, i'd look at new home, husky/husquavarna, bernina (if you find something in your range)

I also recommend Kenmore sewing machines for starting out. But my current machine is a Janome DC3050 which I love but it's out the price range you requested. The Janome ThreadBanger TB12 is a cheaper option.
