Poor kitty! Firstly, I always suggest a vet visit for any type of injury or illness. I am not, and do not pretend to be, a vet of any form. I'm just...experienced.
The above suggestions are all good ones. Those could all be possibilities. Most likely, the area is simply sore and that is making eating and drinking hard, but there is no way to be sure without a vet checking it out. The concern in that case of course would be dehydration and other issues stemming from a mouth/throat injury. If there is swelling, this could prevent swallowing too.
I really think he needs a vet. If the skewer was dirty (you said he was playing with it...I imagined it on the floor), there is a risk of infection as well. Actually, infection is always a risk. Then there is the obvious issue of pain. He could probably use a painkiller.
That's the best advice I can offer. I hope he gets better soon!!
