The streets are flooded...please advise

Most of today was spent on two trains and then finding out hotel but we were able to explore Venice a bit...

I went to Venice 5-6 times and I still barely have any idea how to get anywhere. It's best just to wander and see things on the way. I, however, didn't go during the prime tourist seasons so I can only imagine how crowded those frickin-narrow streets are.
