The cleverest explanation I have seen as to why top posting is bad:

A: Because it destroys the flow of the conversation

Q: Why is it bad?

A: No, it's bad.

Q: Should I top post in replies to mailing lists?

netiquette, internet

I agree. Indiscriminate bottom posting is as bad or worse as as indiscriminate top posting. I try to adopt a rule of only quoting when necessary to provide context and then only quoting the minimum amount to provide that context. For example if I am replying to a mail with multiple questions or multiple mails I might include a single line or sentence indicating which line I am currently answering. The main goal is too avoid quoting at all unless it is needed. Whether one is putting the quotes at the top or bottom doesn't really matter as much if that isn't the case.

Here's my view: written communications are documents not conversations. Done. Any quoted material is an appendix attached to the end of the document for old bastards that can't remember what the hell is going on.
