When worlds collide

Aug 10, 2012 08:58

There has been so much fandom/RL crossover in my world the past week my brain hurts.

I didn't see this on twitter until a little while ago, I heard about it on the morning radio show idiots this morning, which was even worse, because I got to hear the stupid DJ reading some of the excerpts. Jezebel ran an "article" on Olympic swimming RPF where ( Read more... )

SO MUCH! And it sucks with this fandom especially, because so many people already have their LJs and twitters and things locked down, and this stuff only encourages it.

I was LIVING IN FEAR during the convention that it was going to come up. I didn't watch the livestream of a single panel. Is it wrong that I'm looking at the bright side of a lockout as making the fandom growth slow down?

I like the idea of putting stuff on the AO3 and all, but seriously. The fucking Gawker network does not need to read my fic.

Were you in bandom when one of the Gawker sites wrote about the fanfic? It pre-dated my involvement, but I remember hearing about it and cringing. Gawker, stay away from the RPF! It only causes distress to all parties involved!

Maybe? I don't remember one specifically. I do know I was around for the Idolator piece on Bandflesh.

It always causes distress, and this one was particularly mean-spirited to me. The whole "article" was awful, and when the author tweeted that it was up she literally said, "Researching this made my writing worse." Which, really? Then instead of hunting down so-so fic just so you can mock it, do better research, woman.

Nothing good can possibly come of this.

NOTHING AT ALL.

And I really don't want to be that snob declaring people fannishly undesireable or something, but ugh. Just ugh.

This is horrible for many reasons. I just...I want to feel like AO3 is a fannish safe space where I can comment and not have to self-monitor, but now all I can think about are all my comments on the authors listed, and how my LJ username is the same, and how freaking identifiable I am. I can't even cope with this tonight but tomorrow I'm going to lock a bunch of stuff down, which I really didn't want to do. So demoralizing and depressing.

I honestly don't think it will be that big a deal. Most remotely net savvy people know what fic is and could find it if they wanted it long before now. I'm certainly not going to be changing my behavior because of it. But the impulse is still 'bad, fangirl, no biscuit!'
