This is the scary mandatory spay/neuter legislation we are fighting in Dallas right now. If this passes and goes to surrounding cities as well, it will have a DEVASTATING impact on the German Spitz in the US, as 2 of the 5 active breeders in the US are located here. We do not yet have a breed club at all, let alone one with a COE ( Read more... )

SO you only buy puppies from puppy mills? (Commercial breeders, who keep their dogs in non-residential areas.)

Dog breeding isn't neccessarily a business. As a matter of fact, out of the people in the 'dog world' I am associated with NONE that breed make a true profit. Those people that do make profit, that I know, are nothing more than backyard breeders who wouldn't follow this law to begin with. A good, responsible, dog breeder rarely (if ever) makes a profit on his/her puppies. Many dog breeders no longer actively exibit their puppies, but still have breeding stock on hands of their lines (that are high quality) that they breed a few litters from now and again. All this 'law' will accomplish is driving legitimate breeders underground and punishing those who are conciencious, responsible, breeders ( ... )

I've never understood the desire to buy from a breeder when there are so many dogs out there in shelters that need homes.

We got our dog from an animal shelter in Austin..and I couldn't imagine life without him. If we hadn't taken him in - where would he be now?

I'm honestly curious - why do people seek out dogs from a breeder over others?

In my case, I show dogs in obedience, agility and conformation. My two rescues both had major health problems that made this not an option for them. But beyond that, if you want a puppy over an adult and desire predictability, a RESPONSIBLE breeder is the only way to go ( ... )

How many of those people license their dogs as is, though? And why doesn't the city persecute them under current state law- Texas has actually made some advances in state-wide laws about fighting dogs- we got a good one through last fall!

Sorry for this stupid question, but it's been a long day for me . . . What should one do to help prevent this from becoming law?

1. Write your city council member (addresses are at RPOA website). Snail mail AND email AND fax, if you can. I've done this for all the members + the mayor. The more you can do, the better ( ... )
