Texas - House Bill - 3180

There is a bill currently at the Texas Senate Criminal Justice Committee, and they're expected to hold a hearing on it very soon. The bill is for "licensing, regulation and inspection of commercial dog and cat breeders and will regulate the retail sale of dogs and cats." It's pretty tame, but I think it is a good start in decreasing puppy mills ( Read more... )

Or, conversely, call and PLEASE object to htis bill.

I have 5 girls right now. When my roommate is here for the summer, we'll have 12 intact girls on the property, counting client dogs (she handles show dogs.) This law doesn't discriminate for that. My dogs are all houuse dogs, but under this law, I'd have to be a commercial kennel- and meet those regs- meaning no more house dogs.

Additionally the 'max limit of 50 intact females' doesn't specify dogs. So if you own 25 heifers, 20 goats, and 5 dogs? You're just as scrwed as Millie Jo the Puppymiller with 250 dogs pumping out chihuahuas every day.

The problem is thta every bill of this sort that has been passed has subsequently been refined downwards. Colorado now requires you to be a commercially licensed breeder if you're over 10 dogs. There is a group (with a bill!) pushing to get that dropped to FOUR.

Another thing about 'commercial licensure' is that that hten moves out out of being able to have a breeding program out of your home in a residential zoning area.

It might do more good than harm, but I seriously doubt it.
