another one bites the dust

yesterday afternoon, i took this photo. i'd been meaning to take a photo of this building for a long time, because they started knocking it down recently and i know i don't have much longer to go. what you see here is actually less than half the original structure. that thing was huge!

it was formerly a westinghouse electric company building, although it's been vacant for as long as i remember (at least since the mid-1990s, most likely longer). they are knocking it down slowly because it is apparently full of asbestos and who knows what other toxic materials. (nice to know i'm walking through this nearly every day!)

this morning at about 8:30, minutes before my train pulled in across the street, a big piece of the cornice (the side where the blue and red 'westinghouse' sign is) came crashing down and crushed five cars parked underneath. luckily, no one was in any of them. they blocked the surrounding streets to all pedestrian and car traffic, but you could see the piles of bricks with the cars underneath. unfortunately i didn't take any photos, but i might go back later if i have time.

.

in much less dramatic but more personal news, i also took a fall yesterday walking back from lunch. i bruised up both knees (ripped a hole in one of my favorite pants) and my elbow and one hand. ick. it's nothing major, just a lot of scrapes and whatnot, but i think i'm too old to be getting booboos on my knees, no? i'm generally just sore right now. also walking up stairs now sucks. on the plus side i didn't need a tetanus shot, as i'd gotten one less than two years ago when i split my lip open (i think i'm done with childhood injuries now, thank you). that thing left my arm sore for days afterwards.

i was going to work from home today but the doctor on campus wanted to see me this morning so i came in.

buildings, injuries, photos
