If the rumors aren't founded in truth, the person who spreads them around will ultimately look like a fool to everybody anyway. On the flipside, fueling the fire with bitter words only escalates a situation that would normally fizzle to nothing. It's best to diffuse the situation by either backing away and ignoring or confronting the person privately.
If it's trite lies, then you should shrug them off and keep on truckin'. Sometimes people inadvertently do far more damage to others with the things they say than intended, so don't say something unless you really mean it and are willing to stand by it...be it 'I love you' or 'kiss my ass'. If you've got no reasons to feel guilty, then don't sweat it.
