Title: Extra Effort
Theme: Period One: Homeroom_Lunch (1e),
usako_mamoru, 2010 anniversary challenge
Genre: AR, General, Humor
Rating: PG
Notes: Usagi & Mamoru are the same age, because they needed to be in the same homeroom. Also, Japanese students take turns serving each other school lunches.
“Usagi, are you going to eat that?” a friend asked, passing by her desk.
“No!” the blonde said emphatically.
When Umino reached for the fruit, Usagi slapped his hands away. “Don’t!”
“But you said-“
“I’m not going to eat it; he did something to it.”
Curiosity raised Umino’s eyebrows; the brunette was always eager for gossip. “What? Who?”
Usagi lowered her voice and leaned forward. “Chiba,” she said conspiratorially before sitting back.
Umino barked out a laugh. Disbelievingly, he echoed, “Chiba?”
Naru cut her eyes at her blonde friend. “Ignore her. She still hasn’t forgiven Chiba for teasing her so much last year.”
“He’s a jerk,” Usagi announced. “I hate when he’s on lunch duty. I can never eat what he gives me. I know he’s doing something to it, and I won’t fall for it.”

Sitting at his own desk, speaking to his own friends, Mamoru snuck a glance at Usagi. Although the girl was notorious for being ravenous, Mamoru had thought that she’d seemed sincerely hungry today.
He hoped the extra fruit he’d slipped her had helped, even if only a little.
He knew she wouldn’t thank him for it; she rarely spoke to him as it was, but it was progress. They’d moved from “Baka!” to silence and that was something.
He supposed giving her a little extra each time he served lunch had seen to that.
