The book closed and was settled down on the counter.
“So, let me get this straight.”
Serenity focused on slowly slicing the vegetables, bringing the knife down a little harder than she probably needed to, bracing herself for more comments.
“You killed yourself,” her daughter said disbelievingly.
“Yes,” Serenity gritted through her teeth.
“For dad.” It was more statement than question.
Serenity tried to crack her neck. “Yes.”
A long pause. “That’s dumb.”
Serenity blew out a breath. “Yes, it was-“
“I mean, really,” the teenager said with condescension. “Killing yourself for a boy? That’s so, so- Ugh.”
Serenity willed Endymion to come home soon.
“I mean, I know you loved him. Miracle romance and all that.” She flitted her hand in the air dismissively while shaking her pink carnation hair over her shoulder. “But come on! The senshi were female for goodness’ sake! Where was your sense of feminism?” she asked condescendingly.
“I’m home!” Endymion announced happily, sweeping into the room. Serenity glanced at him thankfully.
“And you!” Chibi-Usa said. “Didn’t you even think about your home? Both of you?” she amended. The girl swung her thin legs off the stool. “Ugh,” she said again contemptuously. “Un. Believable,” she muttered as she exited.
Serenity smiled wanly at Endymion. “Hey,” she said.
“I can’t have done anything yet!” Endymion said with no small amount of irritation. “I just got home!”

“Augh!”
Endymion and Zoisite jumped up from their seats and ran towards Venus’s cry, meeting Serenity along the way.
In the kitchen, Venus stared slightly wild-eyed at Chibi-Usa, who was baffled by the glass of liquid that had been thrown on her by the leader of her mother’s senshi.
“What the hel- heck?” Chibi-Usa caught herself in the presence of her parents.
Venus faltered, placing the glass down on the counter and beginning to open drawers in search of a towel. Everyone else stared at the teenager, adorned in her school uniform with several additions besides the orange juice.
Her black high-top Converses had gray skulls imprinted near the heels. Coal knee-high socks sported white skulls and crossbones along the side. A black silver-studded belt hung loose about her waist, while matching bracelets adorned each wrist. Onyx diamond-shaped earrings dangled from each ear. Black eyeliner and dark lipstick paled her already fair complexion. Her pigtails hung in their customary style, the only difference being the inky jet-black that streaked throughout all the strands that were typically flamingo pink.
“Your skirt is too short,” Endymion promptly said. “Unroll it.”
“You gave yourself roots?” Serenity cried out.
Chibi-Usa rolled her eyes. “I got it hemmed. I can’t unroll it. And I can’t dye my hair back. It’s surprisingly hard to find bubble-gum pink in the stores,” she said off-handedly, still trying to pat her shirt dry.
“I’m going to be late,” she finally complained, leaving to change clothes.
“You’re going to wear pants,” Endymion asserted, calling after her.
“She couldn’t have gone through a hip hop phase?” Serenity asked forlornly, sinking into a chair.
Endymion drew himself up. “Have you seen what they wear?” he said indignantly. “All we have to deal with right now is a short skirt.”
“But her hair,” Serenity mourned. “Her hair!”
Venus edged closer to Zoisite, leaving the couple to their lamentations.
“Have you ever seen what Black Lady loo-“
“Yup.”
“Think they’re forgetting on purpose?”
Zoisite shrugged. “Think kids need bad fashion. Parents need delusions. It’s the circle of life.”
