[Fic] Farewell

Title: Farewell
Rating: PG-13
Summary: [Genfic?] In the name of vengeance, Fuji leaves Tezuka behind.

A/N: Random, plotless, written in order to shatter my writer’s block. Somewhat based on that Dynasty Warriors 4 cutscene where Zhang Liao and Guan Yu break up part ways.

Tezuka found Fuji at the castle gates. Fuji was on horseback, and he carried some bags with him. Tezuka’s eyes narrowed.

“Tezuka-dono.”

“Fuji.”

“Ah! Weren’t you a stickler for formality?” Fuji chuckled.

“Times change. Fuji, why are you leaving?” Tezuka disliked the idea of himself looking up at Fuji. Yet he was not on horseback. If he went inside the fortress and got a horse for himself, Fuji would have been long gone when he came back.

“Times change, Tezuka.”

“… Apparently it does.” Tezuka decided there was no use in convincing Fuji to stay. He could not sweet-talk the genius. “Has your family called you?”

“My whole family’s been obliterated.”

This was said so cheerfully that Tezuka’s first thought was that Fuji had sent an army against his own family. Then he recognized the cheerfulness to be a fake.

”I’m sorry.”

“You don’t have to.” Fuji smiled.

“Will you be avenging them?”

No sooner had the words left his mouth than he knew what the response would be. “Of course. What is there to do otherwise?”

“You can stay.”

“Maa, you sound like you like me.”

“Kikumaru-sama likes your skills,” Tezuka corrected. “And Kikumaru-sama has long been planning to invade Mizuki’s territory. Why not wait for him?”

“I can’t.”

If Fuji said so, not even Kikumaru-sama could stop him. Tezuka sighed. “All right.”

“It’s a one-man killing spree, Tezuka. I’m bound to enjoy it.”

“And against Mizuki’s massive army.”

“The bastard will die.”

Tezuka nodded, noting how much venom was in Fuji’s voice. For Fuji to use a word like bastard was not new; it was just rare. And it simply meant he was out to plow through his enemy’s ranks, leave dead people in his wake, kill the enemy commander and dig up the corpse to mangle it to pieces so that the soul, if it existed, could not even wish to return to the skeletal framework of its body.

Knowing Fuji, it was possible.

“Be careful, then.” Tezuka’s throat tightened up at the last word. He could not trust himself to speak without squeaking.

“Thank you.”

Fuji reached out and touched Tezuka’s shoulder.

And then Fuji was galloping towards the horizon. Tezuka stood and watched until Fuji was a mere dot in the distance. Only then did he return to the fortress.
