The next meeting of
my skype book club is March 1, 2016 @ 6:30pm CST and we're discussing
The Book of Strange New Things by Michael Faber Currently there's only two of us and I'm really begging here for another member or two. If a scifi/fantasy book club sounds at all interesting to you, please sign up to participate.
The way the book club works is pretty simple:
Step 1: If you don't already use skype, download the free skype app from here:
http://www.skype.com/en/ and set up your account. It only requires an email address. (It does ask for name, age, location, but you don't have to be honest if you don't want strangers on the internet to have your personal information.)
Step 2: Send me your skype id. PM me here or email it to my work address jstewart@mplonline.org
Step 3: Read the book.
Step 4: Have skype turned on and logged in at book club time--which is
6:30pm CST the first Tuesday of the month.
FYI: Skype supports group video chat on laptop and desktop computers. It will only transmit the audio portion for groups on mobile devices. That is perfectly okay for this club. If you want to use a mobile device and only get audio that is fine. Even if you're on a computer that will do video, you don't have to turn it on if you don't want to.
Why should you participate? Other than to do me a favor...
-I've been in a book club before, also over the internet, and it was a lot of fun. It's nice to be able to talk about a book you've just read with other people who've read the same book. As many different fandoms as there are out there, unless it's something really big--like Harry Potter or Twilight--it's hard to find a group to speculate and debate with. (And after the first run of books I had to go ahead and pick for scheduling purposes, I'd be happy to let book club members pick the future selections. You could definitely get some of your all time favorites on the schedule.)
-If you've been thinking about doing something social, make some new friends (which is so hard as an adult), just generally do something new--but are kind of on the fence about making the time commitment this is just the thing for you. Besides reading the book, it's only an hour a month and you can totally do other things at the same time. There's no reason you can't put your laptop on the kitchen counter and make dinner while we're having the meeting.
