You sure the DDoS is manual? Or I guess, by "manual" do you mean "people browsing to the sites" or "people running scripts from their own home computers"?

Exactly.

Rather than zombied machines issuing a DDoS, this is the machine owners chosing to go to the site, or otherwise chew up the bandwidth.

Twitter's enjoying a temporary window of merit. With its Underpants Gnomes business plan, sooner or later Twitter will have no choice but to sell to someone like Google or Microsoft. The minute that happens, it'll turn into just another tool of the statists. Google, Cisco, Yahoo, Microsoft—every major tech company has proven itself quite willing to sell rubber hoses and cattle prods if it means getting a crack at "emerging markets." Twitter's future owner, whoever it is, will be no exception.
What the world needs is a distributed Twitter, along the lines of P2P networks, something impossible to censor. But due to network effects, no one can have any success developing something like that as long as Twitter exists. So Twitter only gets two cheers from me, not three.

I'm still very angry at Cisco for helping build the Great Firewall of China. And Microsoft caving in on Chinese bloggers.
