seems to be the consensus among my colleagues, though...
(in my defense, and in defense of tiredness, during the day i was up at 3:30, 4:30, and 5:30 before rolling out of bed at 6; was in the car for a 64-mile round-trip commute; and taught three 80-minute classes. essentially, "i'm tired" applies to every day i teach--i find the performing very physically and emotionally draining.)
ultimately i don't mind the commute too much--it's a good chance to listen to NPR or music... more than anything, the first couple weeks are a jolt of trying to reenter a routine i abandoned over summer...
I may have told you, but a guy I work with drives ~100 miles each way, every day from Woodstock Va to Adelphi Md on I-66 and the Beltway (both terrible roads for traffic compared to anywhere in America). Of course, he gets to work at 5am and leaves for home at 3pm.
He is totally insane for doing so, but the most interesting part of it is that he XM in his car and only listens to the bluegrass station, literally, and got the XM specifically to listen to the bluegrass station.
that's nutty... comparatively the 32-mile one-way isn't so bad, i know... i'm only in the car for 40 minutes, assuming traffic isn't all that bad (i'm going against the main commuter flow). for me, the driving is nothing compared to the 240 minutes of trying to be "on" for class. the positive of doing that, though, is that I have MWF generally free and low-key...
my lit class is a mix of discussion and lecture, and my first-year classes are a similar mix. both will occasionally have some small-group work as well... but you still need to be "on," directing discussion, guiding things, etc... so even discussions are pretty performance-oriented...
