Here are my beliefs and how they line up with the two Presidential candidates.
For McCain:
I might as well get this one out of the way right away, cause it's the main reason I haven't talked about many of my beliefs on this election before. I don't believe that going into Iraq was a mistake. I believe that how it was handled before the surge was a mistake. McCain was one of the biggest proponents for the change in tactics that has improved the situation in Iraq. The way that he handled that situation also makes be believe that he would put what he believes is best for the country before his political aspirations. I don't believe that a President should be ruled by the emotions of the country. I also believe that he would take a stronger stance on foreign policy. Countries that would test Obama to see what they could get away with would be less likely to do the same with McCain.
I believe that lowering the taxes on businesses will improve the health of the economy. I believe that nuclear power is as safe as the alternatives when it is properly regulated, which it is now, and we should use more of it.
I believe that the employer based health care system that we currently use is inherently flawed. I also believe that the health care industry should be regulated on the federal and not the state level.
For Obama:
He is younger, healthier, and a better leader. I also believe that he would be a better negotiator with other nations. His election to office would also instantly improve our relations with European countries. A recent article I read showed that those countries strongly favor Obama.
I believe that taxes should be weighted more heavily on the wealthy (without burdening businesses). Trickle down economics doesn't work. I also believe that the taxes on businesses should be weighted based on the number of employees they have in this country (unless we just revamp the whole tax system, which is what I want most, but isn't being offered by either candidate). I also believe that focusing on entrepreneurial businesses, especially those in renewable energy, is an excellent way to improve the health of the economy.
I also believe that Obama is right about many of the problems in health care regulation. Though I believe these problems should be fixed by the federal government, not the states.
My social values more closely align with Obama.
For both:
I think either of them will be a good President. I have no fears of either of them taking office, even though neither of them gives me most of what I think would be best.
I am ambivalent about which of them gets elected. Some days I believe McCain would be better. Other days it's Obama. Both have weaknesses. Both mean that the country is going to sacrifice something that the other could have given.
My vote:
If I was to vote, I honestly don't know who I would choose. The President has a lot of important choices to make, but he also has to be a strong leader. I think McCain would make the better choices for the country in more cases than Obama, but Obama would be the better leader.
I don't really know enough or care enough about the other elections that are going on now. Unless you work in politics, I don't feel that any of us can really know these people well enough to know which of them is better qualified for the position.
Maybe I am unpatriotic, but I still believe that my voice and written word given to me by freedom of speech and press, is more powerful in improving the country at the current time than my vote for people I don't and can't really know.
I will vote when the system gives me an option that I can believe in (or to stop an option that scared the hell out of me. I might have voted for McCain if Hillary was on the ballot). Until then, I will work around the system to encourage the system to offer me those options.
