I'm sadly not that surprised to hear this kind of thing from my old home state of Michigan. Ugh. So glad I left.

It really does depend on where you live in Michigan. The suburbs are terrible, but I'm on WSU campus in Midtown 3 days a week and I have never felt a more diverse environment in my life. Everyone, and I mean everyone, just feels included. The only downside is the city driving and feeling like I'm playing bumper cars on I-94. The suburbs are just downright bad. There's just some kind of bitterness over Detroit and the white flight of the 1960's. And it totally doesn't help that Detroit is currently drowning and people are pointing at "those people" and blaming them ( ... )

I've heard people yell racial slurs in Ann Arbor and be directly insulted by another student at U of M.

I think what gets me upset at this story in a different way than that atrocious man who slapped a toddler and cussed the n-word at his mother, is this is more institutionalized and accepted. No one in the medical staff told the father "That's not our policy" or "Sorry, we can't guarantee that". It was immediately accepted as reasonable and carried out.

Yeah, there are more hard core atheists to deal with... but I would prefer that than to have hard core intolerant, racist "Christians" -- which is what I had in Livonia. Instead, I was ostracized for not going to their specific church AND for being a person of color.
