Can we talk?

First let me say I don't wish to discuss the political nature of the healthcare bill.

But I have questions. Lots of them. I am hoping one of you in the know can enlighten me.

Situation is this:
I am disabled and therefore not working. I do not collect disability of any form.
I do not qualify for Medicaid because the person I live with but am not ( Read more... )

You can choose not to get insurance and pay a $285 penalty annually (that penalty gets raised to $2085 in 2016)...but it's also based off your income so 1% to 2.5% whichever is greater...so you'd be hit with the base penalty.

I do know there are "exceptions" but I don't yet know exactly what they are.

What kind of stand off would someone have to be in to incur a $2085 fee...I can't wait to see how all of this works out.

Hmm. I think so long as I can avoid being penalized for not filing for disability and living with someone who makes over "X" amount, I think I'll be okay. I guess, yeah, I just have to wait to see...I just hate ambiguity and surprises.

Yes, that does clarify some things, thanks!

I guess we'll have to wait and see how it plays out. I just hope it's not one of those things where I call three different offices trying to find out what to do and get three different answers.

This guy does a great job of laying out the facts of the Affordable Health Care Act. Someone else in a similar position to you felt much, much better after reading it, maybe it will be helpful to you as well?

Right now I am on a company plan which has a $5k deductible, but preventative stuff free (Former employer slashed insurance this past year. Go them.). And semi-decent drug coverage for their "preventative drugs" which helps my partner. This ends at the end of the year. I don't know the deets, but I can tell you that I have hopes that this will help me move into an individual market or maybe an exchange plan in 2013 on forward affordable and w/o such a high deductible plan.

Fibro here, too. Allergies. And a family history of nearly every chronic disease known to man.

There may also be an expansion of medicaid by the states, though that's more voluntary than it might have been, which could help too.

*crosses fingers for both of us*
